In a city that loves to watch and be watched, SCENE restaurant appeals to our voyeuristic side.
Blame it on the video screens. You'll find them, streaming chef Blaine Staniford's handiwork live, above the open kitchen of this sexy new nosh-spot inside the renovated '60s Mosaic building downtown. You'll also get an eyeful from the marble-topped bar in the adjoining lounge, offering 360-degree views of all the LED-lit action.
Staniford's latest venture brings the same high energy as his nearby Fuse restaurant, but this time with a glam jolt that complements the Mosaic's cheeky-modern vibe. The prix fixe menu (three courses for $42, five for $62) and chef's tasting menu ($135 with wine pairing per person) serve up modern European fare with a molecular twist. Consider the chilled Yukon gold potato soup, blended with crème fraîche and chives, topped with sturgeon roe, and served in hollowed-out eggs with straws (above left). Or warm up with the yogurt-poached lamb loin and eggplant and piquillo-pepper polenta.
Want the ultimate sweet ending? Don't miss Staniford's dessert spin on a pina colada. One taste of the dried pineapples, coconut mousse and crisped basil, and you'll forget anyone's watching.
